		<description>TiVo
Conference Room Signage // Client Project at MoCo

TiVo has 51 conference rooms named after TV shows or movies. I was tasked with making simple conference room signage. I wanted to take the opportunity and turn it into something fun. These signs are 9" x 24". The Title had to be readable from far away and the image recognizable to viewers of the show. I also added a fun quote for each sign.

		<description>Piquant Vodka
Classwork 2010

Piquant Vodka is a mid-top shelf vodka. I was inspired by the simplicity of making vodka. I used the circles to represent the distillery process. The circles interact with the "u" and get thinner as they get brighter. I also made the package to really stick out on the shelf. The bark background paired with the bright accents in the logo really make the brand stick out.

		<description>Calligraphy Sketchbook
Personal Work 2012

Recently I decided to teach myself calligraphy. I have been learning and applying different techniques. To me mastering the different physical pens and paper is important.

These are pages from the numerous books I have filled up over the last year. I am very new at this and I know I have a long way to go but I love the process of experimenting and exploring.

		<description>The Peel Comedy Hall
Classwork 2010 // Project Breakdown

Overview

The Peel Comedy Hall was the company i created for my BFA project in the spring of 2010. The aim of the class was to take a full semester and create a company that had a unique goal or approach to its brand positioning.

I chose to create a comedy theater. I am a huge fan of stand up comedy and I feel like stand up could reach a much larger audience then it currently does. I wanted to bring the medium to the mainstream.

Comedy is such a diverse genre. One of my goals of this project was to house all forms of comedy in one location. The Peel would showcase new and classic movies and television shows, theater, music, stand up and any other form of comedic outlet that someone can come up with.
&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/105422/1352658/the peel smile logo-01_sml.jpg" width="338" height="183" width_o="338" height_o="183" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/105422/1352658/the peel smile logo-01_sml_o.jpg" data-mid="8832302"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

Challenge

The Peel Comedy Hall needed to appeal to a wide range of consumers. I wanted the two main groups of focus to be families with children under 12 and adults ages 25 to 35.

The positioning was very important. The Peel needed to separate itself from the underground trendy clubs with out alienating that group of consumers.

I needed to update the classic ideas of comedy and bring them into a modern space that appealed to both mature adults and young children.

Popular Comedy Promo:
&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/105422/1352658/Picture 1.png" width="670" height="179" width_o="891" height_o="239" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/105422/1352658/Picture 1_o.png" data-mid="8832317"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

Research

The design process started with in-depth research into what imagery comes to mind when someone thinks of comedy; also what colors and shapes coincide with that feeling. I also tried to dissect comedy into what people look for when deciding to view a comedic piece.

What makes a joke funny:
Comedy is completely subjective. A joke is set up one route then the end is an unexpected bizarre or interesting 90 degree turn. The subject matter usually is dealing with something familiar or uncomfortable.

Who goes to stand-up shows: (out of 142 people)
Age:
18 - 24:  71%
&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/105422/1352658/18-01.png" width="164" height="10" width_o="164" height_o="10" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/105422/1352658/18-01_o.png" data-mid="9651475"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;
25 - 25: 23%
&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/105422/1352658/25-01.png" width="164" height="10" width_o="164" height_o="10" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/105422/1352658/25-01_o.png" data-mid="9651518"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;
 36 - 45: 4%
&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/105422/1352658/36-01.png" width="164" height="10" width_o="164" height_o="10" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/105422/1352658/36-01_o.png" data-mid="9651521"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;
 46 +:    2%
&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/105422/1352658/46-01.png" width="164" height="10" width_o="164" height_o="10" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/105422/1352658/46-01_o.png" data-mid="9651524"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

Sex:
men 59%                women 42%
&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/105422/1352658/men-01.png" width="204" height="10" width_o="204" height_o="10" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/105422/1352658/men-01_o.png" data-mid="9651527"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;
I found that most people go to a comedy show with as a date or as a larger group, usually groups consisted of one sex.

Marketing Target:
Name: Jeffery
Age: 27
Sex: Male
Marital Status: Married
Children: 1
Vehicle: 4 Door Sedan
Occupation: Electritian

Strategy

After my extensive research and looking at how other brands positioned themselves, I decided that I wanted to focus on classic jokes. I wanted to bring classic comedy and iconography up to date with a more modern feeling.

Other Comedy Club's Websites:
&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/105422/1352658/xwebs.jpg" width="670" height="385" width_o="891" height_o="513" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/105422/1352658/xwebs_o.jpg" data-mid="8832332"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

Creative Direction

When approaching the design process I wanted to take what I learned from dissecting jokes and comedic ideas and apply that to the graphics. The main concepts I took from my research is simplicity and the introduction of something subtle and unexpected. I wanted to either take a joke in a new direction or combine punchlines in a new and interesting way.

Font:
Century Gothic Regular and Bold (lower case).
Simple, circular, shapes fit the simple fun feeling I wanted.
&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/105422/1352658/xfont.jpg" width="670" height="139" width_o="891" height_o="186" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/105422/1352658/xfont_o.jpg" data-mid="8832341"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

Colors:
             Banana yellow and brown paired with a unique natural green.
&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/105422/1352658/xcolors.jpg" width="670" height="100" width_o="891" height_o="134" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/105422/1352658/xcolors_o.jpg" data-mid="8832347"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

Design

The design focuses on the classic comedy iconography with a new twist. I created a logo, packaging, apparel, collateral and web elements.

logo:
In a joke the most important part is the punchline. A good punchline is unexpected. For the logo I wanted to utilize this same idea by flipping the second e. Creating something the brain does not always see right away. I also wanted to have a subtle sense of a smiling interaction with the e’s to help portray the comedy hall aspect.

Won 2010 Student ADDY Gold Award for Logo
&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/105422/1352658/the peel smile logo-01_sml.jpg" width="338" height="183" width_o="338" height_o="183" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/105422/1352658/the peel smile logo-01_sml_o.jpg" data-mid="8832302"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

Stationary:
For the stationary I wanted to use the basic stationary format and flip it upside down. Where the logo normally sits I placed a photo of a banana peel, the inspiration for the logo. I moved the logo to the bottom right and set in a shape that I pulled from the negative space of the banana icon.
&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/105422/1352658/peel and station.jpg" width="670" height="496" width_o="1360" height_o="1008" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/105422/1352658/peel and station_o.jpg" data-mid="8832357"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

Packaging:
The packaging was one of the most fun projects that I created for The Peel. I wanted to bring back the old pranks and gags that I remember so fondly from my childhood and update the package. I chose to separate the item categories by using bright color coding. This would make the items stand out on shelves and appeal to small children.

Won 2010 Student ADDY Silver Award for Packaging
&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/105422/1352658/peel pack.jpg" width="670" height="497" width_o="728" height_o="541" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/105422/1352658/peel pack_o.jpg" data-mid="8832362"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

Website:
My main goal for the website was to really be the keystone of the company. I wanted to tie all the design together and bring a useful tool to a casual and hardcore comedy fan. The biggest goal was to fit a lot of information into a simple non overwhelming layout.

Along side the venues news and show listings I wanted to create a comprehensive database of comedians, television, movies, and other acts. the database will integrate with social media to allow users to rate and review what the have seen. This will also allow the sharing and suggestions between friends and the company to help discover something new and broaden consumers options.
&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/105422/1352658/peel-home.jpg" width="670" height="502" width_o="1024" height_o="768" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/105422/1352658/peel-home_o.jpg" data-mid="8832376"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

Apparel:
When I was creating The Peel’s logo i explored many options of saying “the peel” very simply and in a unique fashion. I decided the icon was not going to work as a logo because its hard to read for some one not familiar with the brand. When I was going through ideas for apparel designs I immediately wanted to use this icon for a t shirt.
&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/105422/1352658/peel TSHIRT.png" width="670" height="349" width_o="727" height_o="379" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/105422/1352658/peel TSHIRT_o.png" data-mid="8832381"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;</description>

		<description>Roland Dille Center for the Arts
Freelance Work 2010/2011

Every year the Roland Dille Center for the Arts asks one graphic designer from the previous year to design the gallery materials for the next school year. I was asked to design the promotional posters and postcards for the fall of 2010 and spring of 2011. I wanted to simplify elements of different areas of art as the focus.

		<description>The Drunk Duck
Personal Project 2013

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/105422/1352936/DD-Logo-01.jpg" width="616" height="634" width_o="616" height_o="634" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/105422/1352936/DD-Logo-01_o.jpg" data-mid="30687737"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

Canadian Crown Rye Whiskey
Personal Project 2011
Canadian Crown Whiskey was inspired from the rich history of Canadian rye whiskey.
&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/105422/1352936/cc.jpg" width="599" height="273" width_o="599" height_o="273" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/105422/1352936/cc_o.jpg" data-mid="29812070"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

The Literacy Lab
Freelance 2011
I was asked to create a logo for a new company that a teacher friend of mine is starting. She had been teaching for over 15 years and has accrued a lot of teaching materials that she has created to aid students' learning process and she want to share these aids with other teachers.
&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/105422/1352936/lit lab log.jpg" width="670" height="430" width_o="672" height_o="432" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/105422/1352936/lit lab log_o.jpg" data-mid="10730370"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

Piquant Vodka
Classwork 2010
Piquant Vodka is a mid-top shelf vodka. I was inspired by the simplicity of making vodka. I used the circles to represent the distillery process. The circles interact with the "u" and get thinner as they get brighter.

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/105422/1352936/piq logo.jpg" width="670" height="340" width_o="1280" height_o="650" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/105422/1352936/piq logo_o.jpg" data-mid="6630308"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

Hallie - Hair Stylist

Personal Project 2011
&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/105422/1352936/HJB BC Logo-03.png" width="670" height="305" width_o="744" height_o="339" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/105422/1352936/HJB BC Logo-03_o.png" data-mid="19955459"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

Gauge Outerwear
Personal Project 2011
With gauge I wanted to create a brand that was rugged but comfortable. With the brand I wanted to have an open feel by the use of texture
&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/105422/1352936/gauge logo.jpg" width="670" height="354" width_o="1224" height_o="648" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/105422/1352936/gauge logo_o.jpg" data-mid="6579659"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

The Peel Comedy Hall
Classwork 2010
Won 2010 Student ADDY Gold Award for Logo
In a joke the most important part is the punchline. A good punchline is unexpected. For the logo I wanted to utilize this same idea by flipping the second e. Creating something the brain does not always see right away. I also wanted to have a subtle sense of a smiling interaction with the e’s to help portray the comedy hall aspect.

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/105422/1352936/the peel smile logo-01_12.jpg" width="658" height="287" width_o="658" height_o="287" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/105422/1352936/the peel smile logo-01_12_o.jpg" data-mid="10513699"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

Peak Tea Co.
Personal Project 2011
Peak tea is a all natural, bright and fun tea company that I created just for fun in my free time. I wanted to challenge myself to create something out of my normal comfort zone.

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/105422/1352936/peak logo.jpg" width="670" height="354" width_o="1224" height_o="648" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/105422/1352936/peak logo_o.jpg" data-mid="6630324"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

MN Timberwolves 2011
Associate Designer 2011
While working for the Minnesota Timberwolves I created a logo for their new dynamic ticket pricing system. Wolves Tix is a demand-based pricing system of single game tickets for Minnesota Timberwolves home games. Prices are driven by fan demand and seat availability.

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/105422/1352936/Wolves Tix Logo.jpg" width="670" height="354" width_o="1224" height_o="648" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/105422/1352936/Wolves Tix Logo_o.jpg" data-mid="6630315"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;
